ISTE.T Standard I
Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity
Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments. Teachers:
a. promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness
b. engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources
c. promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students’ conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes
d. model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual environments
I see this standard as requiring educators to encourage students to learn, regardless of the content area. In other words, teaching the student how to think for themselves and how to enjoy doing so. The standard gives educators several actions that need to take place to ensure the bigger goal. Several of the projects completed in this course will serve to fulfill this standard. First, the lesson plan is used to organize the learning activities to best encourage learning. This plan not only ensures learning of the subject matter, but also serves as a model to the students on how to learn subject matter. The resource page on the class website is another way to encourage learning. This gives the students place to start their own independent exploration of the subject matter beyond what is contained in the lesson. This also gives students examples of resources that may be relied on to have accurate and quality information. The discussion forum allows the students to use collaborative tools to clarify their understanding of lesson concepts. Lastly, the poster project that will be completed in class will encourage the students to use collaborative tools to understand the thinking, planning, and creative processes involved with learning.
Future Learning Goal: In most of my courses I incorporate a problem-based learning project or a group research project. The lesson I presented on the course website did not require the students to think through a problem. In the larger course that this lesson is pulled from, the students are divided into groups and assigned an autoimmune disease. The group is then given the task to research the disease and develop an awareness campaign for that disease. Including this project would allow this course to better meet this standard.
